Four policemen of Khanna police were deployed with him. When the incident occurred, three of them were absent while the fourth was sleeping in the other ward.

The miscreants struck around 1.30. The security staff and patients raised an alarm, but the miscreants held the staff captive.

Garcha, who was facing several criminal cases in Ludhiana and surrounding areas, was booked in an attempt-to-murder case in November by Khanna Police when, he along with his accomplices, indulged in a gunfight with a rival group at a marriage function. In the incident, Garcha suffered a bullet injury and was rushed to CMCH. The police had booked eight people from both groups.

Khanna deputy superintendent of police Raj Kumar said four cops were deployed at CMCH with Garcha for keeping a tab on him. The police wanted to arrest him formally after he was discharged from hospital.

The Division Number 3 police have started investigations.
