A cop on patrol duty was assaulted at Prof Mohan Singh Chowk (Aarti Chowk) around 2 am here on Saturday.

Two miscreants alighted from a white-coloured car and threw chilli powder in the eyes of constable Narinder Kumar, who was deputed on PCR motorcycle number 37 and was standing in front of an eatery, and overpowered him.

They then snatched his service pistol (.38 bore), including five cartridges, and a mobile phone, and smashed his wireless set on the road and fled.

The miscreants threw his mobile phone around 100 metres away from the spot.

After receiving information, the police initiated investigation and alerted all patrolling parties. It also alerted Ludhiana (rural), Moga, Sangrur and Barnala police.

With the help of closed circuit television (CCTV) recordings from cameras installed at different establishments on the Ferozepur road, the police came to know that the accused had driven towards the Mullanpur Dakha area. Their car was also spotted in the footage of a camera installed outside MBD malls on the Ferozepur road.

The Division Number 5 police registered a case under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 382 (snatching) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified accused. The police suspect that accused could be three or more in number.

The police have been suspecting gangs active in Barnala and Sangrur behind the incident.

Police commissioner Paramjit Singh Gill said due to dark the video recording was not clear, but they have launched manhunt to arrest the accused.
