A seven-year-old girl, Suman, who was missing since Saturday, was found murdered in the sugarcane fields in her village, Majri Jattan, near Rupnagar on Monday.
A search party comprising villagers and cops stumbled upon the body. Pieces of a brick and a towel were also found near the body that had injury marks.
The body was taken to Rupnagar civil hospital where a board of doctors conducted post-mortem.
One of the doctors Dr Amarinder Singh Gill said the girl’s throat had been slashed. He said the tissues of the body had been damaged due to maggots.
He said vaginal swabs had been sent for tests to the laboratory to ascertain whether she was raped or not.
Rupnagar SSP Varinder Paul Singh said it was a murder and investigations were on. He said the killer appears to be from the area and will be nabbed soon.
Suman’s father Harmel Singh, a labourer, said they suspected none as the family didn’t have an enmity with anyone.
