Just a day after the decomposed body of a four-year-old girl was found in a Model Town house, the police on Saturday found the naked body of a nine-year-old girl in a dried water tank on a plot at Shakti Nagar of Basti Jodhewal.

The deceased identified as Pushpa of New Shastri Nagar area, had been missing since April 22. The body was totally decomposed.

A case of abduction under sections 363 and 367 was registered against unidentified accused in this context on April 23. The police have now added section of murder in the FIR. They have also not ruled out the possibility of rape before the murder.

A team of doctors, comprising Dr Manjot Kaur, Dr Avinash Jindal and Dr Anantjeet Kaur, conducted the post-mortem examination at the civil hospital. As the body was decomposed, the board is yet to ascertain the cause of death, but has suspected that the victim was sexually assaulted.

The matter came to light when some children went to the vacant plot to collect grass for their goats. There they saw the girl's decomposed body lying in a dried water tank. The children raised an alarm and informed the locals, who sounded the police. After receiving information, Basti Jodhewal police reached the spot and initiated investigation.

Later, Bhajan Singh of New Shastri Nagar area identified the deceased as his daughter.

According to Bhajan, a porter at the local railway station, his daughter had been missing since April 22. He had also approached the police and got a case registered against unidentified accused in this context.

Inspector Balwinder Singh, station house officer (SHO), Basti Jodhewal police station, said the girl was killed around 20 days old. “It seems the accused killed her after a day or two of kidnapping her.”
Woman rounded

up for questioning

Meanwhile, suspecting her involvement, the police rounded up a woman, Baby, a neighbour of the deceased. According to Bhajan, Baby had been asking him to let her adopt Pushpa and had also offered him Rs 25,000 for it.

“The woman repeatedly pestered us for adoption, following which we had made a complaint to the police. After Pushpa's kidnapping, the police had summoned Baby for questioning two times, but had released her later,” said Bhajan.

Youngest among three siblings, Pushpa had an elder sister, who is married, and a 15-year-old brother.

Second similar murder in past four months

The murder of another minor girl has left the police in a tizzy. This is the second incident in the past four months where the police have found decomposed body of an abducted girl.

As per preliminary investigations, the police are suspecting the same accused behind the two murders.

Earlier, the decomposed body of a six-year-old girl, Beauty Kumari, was recovered from a vacant plot in Ekta Colony of Gehlewal village in Basti Jodhewal on January 21. The body recovered on Saturday was also found in a vacant plot in Basti Jodhewal area.

Missing since January 12, Kumari's half-naked body was found buried under bricks and debris on the plot. It was later found out that after raping the girl, the accused had strangulated her to death and hid the body under debris. The police had also recovered empty bottles of liquor, toffees and syringes from the spot.

Later, the police announced a cash reward for any information about the killer. But, the case is still lying pending in police files.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (east) Satish Malhotra said the police were studying both cases. “There are certain similarities, but nothing can be said as the investigation in Saturday's case is in early stage.”

He said it seemed that the accused killed the girl on the vacant plot itself and dumped the body in the dried water tank.
