The Daba police have booked the gunman of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator Darshan Singh Shivalik for allegedly beating his elderly neighbour to death on late Sunday night.

Though the police claim that the victim died due to cardiac arrest, his family members have accused the police of shielding the accused.

The accused, Amrit Singh, has been booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC. He and his family are at large since the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Sher Singh (60), an ex-serviceman from Daba area. According to police, Amrit was getting his house renovated for which he had dumped sand in front of his house. On Sunday, due to the windy weather, the sand blew into Sher's house, following which he approached Amrit to complain about it.

The duo soon indulged in an altercation, which turned into a brawl as Amrit allegedly repeatedly punched Sher.

As a result, Sher collapsed on the ground, while the accused fled the spot. The victim's family rushed him to a private hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Inspector Ratanjit Singh, SHO, Daba police station, said as per preliminary investigation Sher had died due to cardiac arrest. However, the police had booked Amrit, he said, adding that the police could add more sections against the accused after receiving the autopsy report of the deceased.

The SHO said efforts were on to arrest the accused.
