An Akali leader, Beant Singh, who was shot at in Wadhaghar village under Baghapurana subdivision in Moga district on June 12, died at Dayanand Medical Collage and Hospital (DMCH) in Ludhiana on Tuesday.

Beant, 45, was son of Kartar Singh, a former chairman of the Moga-2 block samiti. Police investigations reveal that the assailants attacked Beant following a petty dispute. No arrest has been made so far, said the police.

Additional station house officer of the Baghapurana police station Ved Parkash Sharma said the body had been handed over to the family after post-mortem.

A case was registered against Simar Singh, a resident of Behbal Kalan village of Faridkot district, and two unidentified persons under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on the statement of the Beant’s father.

The police have now imposed Section 302 (murder) against the accused and a hunt is on to nab the accused, said the police official.
