The Pathankot police on Thursday arrested a Moga youth for alleged links with Pakistani spy Irshad Ahmed, who had been nabbed on January 31.
The accused has been identified as Sandeep Singh alias Sunny, a resident of Talwandi Mallian village in Dharamkot (Moga district).
Sources said the intelligence bureau (IB) had detained Sandeep due to his links with Irshad, a native of Surankot in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Irshad had been arrested from the Mamun Cantonment area on the charges of spying for Pakistani agency ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) and booked under the Official Secrets Act.
The sources added that Sandeep, who was taking IELTS coaching from SAS Nagar, had got in touch with Irshad through a social website.
Officials said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had been informed about the arrest.
Sources said Sandeep’s father Ajaib Singh and other family members were questioned by intelligence agencies. Ajaib claimed that he was not aware of his son’s links with any Pakistani spy.
When contacted, RK Bakshi, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Pathankot, confirmed the youth’s arrest.
“We have procured his three-day remand from the court,” he said.
