The district has become the first one in Punjab to provide private water connections for potable water. Very soon, it will also become the first district to have individual water works for each village.
Water supply and sanitation department executive engineer (rural) Sukhvinder Singh Pandher said this on Wednesday.
He added that Rs 55.62 crore have been spent under the World Bank project for providing drinking water supply in the villages; besides, water works worth rs 9.13 crore are under construction in 25 villages of the district.
Pandher said various water supply schemes have been handed over to the villages after forming water supply and sanitation committees.
“These committees operate and maintain these schemes, having private water connections more than 70%, with the help of the department of water supply and sanitation,”he said.
He added that during the current financial year, rs 11.79 crore have been spent on providing sewerage system in eight villages. Also, to maintain a healthy environment, sewerage treatment plants have been installed in these villages.
