Ekam Singh Dhillon and his wife Seerat Kaur Dhillon typified a couple who despite having discord in private would display love and warmth for each other in public, including on social media.

The couple would come across as a couple completely in love with each other, if their friends’ accounts and the photographs they shared on their social networking sites are of any indication. Ekam was allegedly shot dead by Seerat with her brother and his friend in SAS Nagar on Saturday night. She even tried to dispose of the body after packing it in a suitcase.

The killing of Ekam allegedly by Seerat has sent shock waves among their close friends. Many of them vouched that there was nothing like an extra-marital affair from both Ekam’s and Seerat’s side and they used to give proper attention to each other at parties.

Seerat, daughter of an army captain, had an arranged marriage with Ekam who worked in tea estates in Assam in the early 2000s. Seerat’s grandfather Ranjeet Singh Brar was very close to ex-President Giani Zail Singh.

‘KNOWN NAMES IN PARTY CIRCLES’

Seerat and Ekam were known names in elite party circles and were well connected with some Punjab politicians and senior bureaucrats. Seerat, who came from a well-to-do family, also aspired to fit her husband in these circles. Her maternal uncle and former Sardulgarh MLA Ajit Inder Singh Mofar who raised her after her father’s death when she was very young.

She would also make an effort to remain in touch with her friends and cousins, who were well placed in political and bureaucratic circles. Initially, they stayed in posh sectors in Chandigarh to fit in the elite circles. The couple showed respect for each other in public and never brought out any bitterness in public, their friends say.

Ekam is also learnt to be quite caring towards his children.

Some of their close friends say that she liked to display expensive things, especially branded handbag collections from Gucci to Louis Vuitton. She would hang around in parties and would sometimes used to quite drunk. They said Seerat would go an extra mile to show that her husband showered expensive gifts on her.

‘WAS FINANCIALLY DEPENDENT ON HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW’

They said Seerat’s mother, who owned properties in Chandigarh and Punjab, would bear expenses of the couple as she stayed with them most of the time. A close friend on the condition of anonymity said once Seerat confided in her that Ekam was not earning much and they were completely dependent on her mother financially. Ekam did not get any support from his parents or brother and therefore was dependent on his mother-in-law and wife.

Even as Ekam was not able to afford her lavish lifestyle, the two liked to be seen in parties and clubs. They used to move around in a BMW car registered in the name of Ekam’s mother-in-law.

The couple after coming to Chandigarh, had stayed on rent in Sectors 11, 18 and 40 before shifting to SAS Nagar where to they also lived in a rented accommodation.
