Women must fight back when an attempt is made to outrage their modesty, as this can be the only real deterrent for rapists.
Kavita, 26, a bank officer, epitomised this courage on Thursday evening when She fought with an unidentified man, who tried to molest her outside her residence. Her fierce counter-attack injured the suspect and he was forced to flee.
However, even though her courage should have been awarded and encouraged, the city police took 48 hours to register an FIR. “Tusi banda lab lao, pher asi farr lavange (you make a search and identify the accused, then we will arrest him),” Malkiat Singh, Kavita’s colleague in the bank, has quoted SHO Somnath as saying, in response to queries on action taken by the police to nab the culprit. It was Malkit Singh who informed the police on Thursday evening about the incident.
However, it was only when the word reached senior police officials, the case was registered.
Gaurav Yadav, police commissioner, said that a case under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC has been registered.
“I have deputed assistant commissioner of police Manjeet Kaur to personally meet Kavita and get the case investigated to bring the culprit to the book. We will not spare him. Teams are out to identify and arrest the culprit,” Yadav said, adding that womenfolk should feel free to contact police in case of facing such acts.
Speaking to Hindustan Times here, Kavita, a native of Bhagalpur in Bihar, said that she was returning to her Green Model Town home from office at 7 pm, when the man attacked her. She said that the lane was engulfed in darkness due to a power cut.
“I was about to enter my house, when someone overpowered me from the back and tried to molest me. I panicked for a while as the grip was tight and he had also gripped my shoulders. However, using my presence of mind, I hit my elbow into the man’s stomach. He released his grip momentarily, but again put his hands on my mouth,” she claimed.
She joined her new assignment in the city just five months back.
Recounting the incident, she added: “The man had covered my face and even his nails were digging into my skin. Somehow, I managed to release myself and picked up a brick on the road and hit him on the face, injuring him in the process.”
“At this, he got scared and escaped. I chased him for a while, but gave up. I wanted to hand him over to the police. He must be bleeding as I hit him very badly. The guy was wearing a capri and a sweater. He did not want to rob me as he did not touch my bag and even my mobile, which were there for the taking,” she said.
