Concerned over the depleting ground water level, agriculture officials have urged the farmers in the district to go for crop diversification, laying stress on the cultivation of corn. Meanwhile, Monsanto, a multi-national agricultural company, would initiate a drive to provide technical training to farmers about the cultivation of corn.
"The Punjab government has outlined a programme to bring an area of 10 lakh hectares under pulses, oil seeds, corn and basmati crops in the next five years," district agriculture officer Dilbagh Singh said. He said diversification would be promoted in Jalandhar Hoshiarpur, Ropar, Mohali and Majha region.
He said corn was much in demand world over and it can be cultivated twice a year on any kind of land.
He said Monsanto would train farmer in corn cultivation, for which 200 exhibition plants would be set up in different districts with the collaboration of Punjab State Farmers' Commission.
