Monsoon 35% deficient in Chandigarh this year

With the monsoon season going to conclude on Wednesday, Chandigarh received 35% below normal rain this year.

Monsoon arrives every June 1 and recedes from the country on September 30. According to Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, the city received 548 mm of rainfall this monsoon against the expected normal rainfall of 839.8mm. It makes Chandigarh 35% rain deficient this monsoon.

However, there was variation in the status of monsoon within city also. As per the data collected from the met centre at the Chandigarh airport, the condition was better as compare to the meteorological centre in Sector 39. The airport area recorded 572.8mm of rainfall this season.

The situation is much better this year as compared to last year. In 2014 monsoon season, the city received just 223mm of rainfall, a deficient of 58%.

The city experienced first monsoon showers in the last week of June. July recorded maximum rainfall in the season at 249mm. In September, the city received rain for five days (138mm).
