After experiencing months of scorching heat, residents of Bathinda heaved a sigh of relief when it got the first monsoon showers on Sunday.

Although the showers around 10.45 am lasted for only a few minutes, children did not miss the opportunity to frolic in the rain or play cricket, while elders too were seen enjoying themselves. After the showers, the weather became pleasant here and girls went shopping in the market.

"We are very happy that it rained," Surinder Singh, a resident said. "As the weather was extremely hot, we were looking for some respite. Several people had died because of heatstroke."

Residents here are hoping for more showers. About 30 people here died of heatstroke when the temperature was over 40°Celsius.
