Sensing public anger over the brazen killing of a police officer in Amritsar by Akali goons, the district police have woken up to past charges against influential people.

After more than a month of delay, they have registered rape charges against the grandson of a legislator's brother. The suspect, Rajinder Singh Babbu of Smao village, is also son of an assistant sub-inspector in the police.

In the crime reported on November 6, Babbu was alleged to have four accomplices. His father, Jaspal Singh, is ASI at Budhlada, and his grandfather, Sukhdev Singh, is brother of the Budhlada legislator, Chittan Singh Smao.

The suspects are also charged with shooting a dirty video of the crime. The victim is from a village of Mansa district, and based on her complaint first brought out on November 6, the Bhikhi police now have registered a case under Sections 376 (rape), 420 (cheating), 313 (forced abortion), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Babbu, Kiranjit Kaur, Prem Singh, Simranjit Singh, and Gursewsk Singh.

The victim had charged Babbu and his accomplices with exploiting her after shooting her dirty video, raping her for many months, and each time recording it on film. She said the police had not taken any action on her complaint.

"Babbu's father is a police officer," said the victim. "The police promised they will register a case but didn't. A few days ago, I took the complaint to the deputy commissioner of Mansa and when he marked it to the senior superintendent of police, Babbu first agreed to marry me but later shot more videos of me and threatened to upload the content on the Internet."

SSP Narinder Bhargav said he was on medical leave but he could confirm that the main suspect and two of his accomplices had been arrested. "Rest you may ask the inquiry officer, deputy superintendent of police Sulakhan Singh," he said. The main suspect is son of ASI Jaspal Singh," said the DSP. "Three suspects, including him, are under arrest. We had registered the case after about 15 days of the complaint."
