Even though the municipal corporation (MC) is still to act against old encroachments in the city, the civic body, in a recent survey, has found that many more encroachments are being raised in residential areas.
In reply to a right to information (RTI) application, the MC informed about encroachments in Bihari Colony and Labour Colony near Cheema Chowk. However, the MC had not included these areas in the latest report of encroachments submitted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court recently.
A city resident, Rohit Sabharwal had complained about encroachments, after which, a survey was conducted by the civic body, in which 290 permanent encroachments were found.
Sabharwal said: “Majority of these are residential encroachments and should be dealt with as per the law. The MC should also include new encroachments in the list.”
During hearing of a contempt petition in Punjab and Haryana high court on September 30, the judge had directed the civic body to file an affidavit about a specific action against encroachments within nine weeks. The next hearing in the case is on January 27, 2015.
