In all 109 rape cases that took place in the year 2013 in Ludhiana, known persons or relatives were involved in the crime, highlighting the vulnerability of women even at their homes.
Ludhiana has not been able to leave the tag of one of the unsafe cities of the country with such a large number of rapes in a year. This was revealed in the data of national crime records bureau (NCRB) of the ministry of home affairs.
A total of 888 rape cases were registered at different police stations across the state during the year. Out of these, a majority of 159 cases took place with girls in the age group of 14 to 18 years in Punjab. In Ludhiana, the number was 33.
This trend has shown the vulnerability of teenage girls in the state as well in the city. It was surprising that in most of the rape cases in the state, the accused was a known or a relative.
The data clearly showed as to how all accused in Ludhiana were known to the victim in some way or the other. Total number of crime against women that include rape, dowry and abduction was a whopping 4,994 in the state, of which 888 incidents took place in Ludhiana.
The number of cases under crime against women had gone up significantly in Ludhiana, with 68 cases of rape reported in 2012. In 2013, the cases had gone up to 109. Cases of kidnapping and abduction which counted 99 in the city in 2012 had gone up to 110 in 2013.
