In an apparent bid to placate Manmohan Singh days after terming an ordinance introduced by the government as “nonsense”, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi called the Prime Minister his “political guru”.
Gandhi said he met the PM after he had criticised the ordinance.
“I was joking with the prime minister after the ordinance (controversy) and I told him what was in my heart. I told him we have learnt from him,” he said.
At a press conference in September, Gandhi had said an ordinance to shield convicted politicians, brought by the Manmohan Singh government, was “nonsense” and needed to be “torn and thrown away”.
Sporting a pink turban, Gandhi went on to shower praises on the PM. “Ever since I have joined politics, I consider Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singhji my political gurus. No one has done as much for the country as Manmohan Singh. PM has absolutely clear intentions for the country’s welfare.”
He went on to say, “I thank Punjab for giving Manmohan Singh to the Congress, whose contributions to the nation are unparalleled.”
Talking about the drug menace and rising unemployment, Gandhi said Punjab would not achieve the desired development till both these problems are rooted out.
Gandhi was in Malwa region, which has recorded cancer incidence of 107.4 cases per lakh as against the national figure of 80 per lakh, to lay the foundation stone of PGIMER Satellite Centre.
“Every mother in Punjab fears that her son or daughter may get addicted to drugs while young people are worried about their inability to feed their families as they are jobless,” he said, attacking the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government.
He also took on Narendra Modi for ousting Punjabi farmers, who have been living in Gujarat since 1965, from the state. “Every Indian is a nationalist first, state comes later. The SAD should press its partner BJP to withdraw the cases against Punjabi farmers in Gujarat.”
Gandhi added that while other governments build roads and hospitals, it is the UPA government which has truly empowered the common man.
“It’s the UPA which provided Right to Information, Education and Food Security Bill. Our politics is that of empowerment,” he said.
