The Amritsar police have arrested a woman hailing from Madhya Pradesh for allegedly tearing pages of the holy ‘gutka’ outside the Akal Takht building on the Golden Temple premises on Tuesday.

The woman, identified as Bano, has been booked under Section 295-A (hurting religious sentiments) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), on the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)’s complaint.

“The woman was sitting outside the Akal Takht, when she was spotted tearing pages of the ‘gutka’ that she was carrying and hiding them in her clothes. When woman sewadars frisked her, four pages were found,” said assistant commissioner of police (ACP, central) Manjit Singh.

The ACP said cops were still probing as to what prompted the woman to commit the sacrilege. Sources said initially the SGPC was reluctant to report the incident, but as the news of sacrilege spread, it went ahead with lodging a formal complaint.
