Surinder Singh, 22, a youth from Rupana village here, allegedly committed suicide on Thursday night by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in a room of a girls' hostel on the premises of the Government Senior Secondary School in the village.

The youth allegedly entered the hostel during Thursday-Friday midnight and, when the watchman, noticed him entering the hostel and challenged him, the youth ran and shut himself in an unoccupied room in the hostel. He bolted the room from inside.

The watchman knocked at the door but got no response from the room. He called the school principal and village residents to the hostel. When the door was broken open by them, the youth was found hanging with the ceiling fan and was found dead.

The police did not suspect any bad intention on the part of the youth because the hostel is only for small girls of Classes 6 to 8.

"The youth was allegedly in depression and the police have proceeded under section 174(suicide) of CrPc in this regard," said Tejinderpal Singh, station house officer of Sadar police station.
