Inspector Harjinder Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Mulepur police station and constable Amandeep Singh, who was driving the car, died in a Scorpio-truck collision that took place at Mandi Gobingarh at around 3:30 pm on Friday.
The SHO and constable were going from Khanna to Sirhind when the Scorpio (PB 10DB 5303) in which they were travelling rammed into a truck (PB 06 K 2575) standing on a flyover at Mandi Gobindgarh.
According to eye witnesses it was of such high intensity collision that front part of car was badly damaged and locals had to struggle to pull out the injured cops out. Mandi Gobindgarh SHO Shamsher Singh reached the spot immediately with his team. Amandeep, 24, was taken to a local hospital from where he was referred to a private hospital in Doraha. He succumbed to injuries during treatment.
Meanwhile Harjinder Singh was taken to private hospital in Khanna, where the doctors stated him to be serious and referred him to DMC, Ludhiana. However, Harjinder Singh, too, succumbed to his injuries around 6 pm, confirmed ASI Sadhu Khan.
Meanwhile, truck driver Gurnam Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur, who was travelling towards Banur fled from the spot. Eye witnesses said that a tyre of the truck burst and the driver was fixing it.
Later, the police succeeded in nabbing the driver, confirmed Harcharan Singh Bhullar, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Fatehgarh Sahib. “We have started our investigation,” he added.
