A double-murder convict bludgeoned a fellow inmate to death in his sleep at the central jail here on Wednesday morning. Jail officials said the accused, Arun Kumar, was mentally disturbed.
The victim, Sanjiv Kumar (28), was also serving 14-year jail for murder.
The accused is serving 20-year jail for the murder of his sister-in-law (brother’s wife) and her daughter-in-law.
Before committing the crime, the accused recited some prayers and afterwards proclaimed it as “an offering to the God”. He later regretted killing Sanjiv, saying “he was a good man”.
Division 7 police have started investigations and registered a case under Section 303 (murder by life convict) of the IPC against the accused. The jail department, too, has initiated a probe.
Sanjiv and Arun reportedly were good friends and used to spend most of the time together.
Jail officials said the incident occurred at around 6am. Arun picked a brick, washed it, chanted some prayers and hit Sanjiv, who was sleeping near him, on the head. Fellow inmates sounded the jail officials and Arun was nabbed. Sanjiv was rushed to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
