Before committing the crime, the accused recited some prayers and afterwards proclaimed it as “an offering to the God”. He later regretted killing Sanjiv, saying “he was a good man”.

Division 7 police have started investigations and registered a case under Section 303 (murder by life convict) of the IPC against the accused. The jail department, too, has initiated a probe.

Sanjiv and Arun reportedly were good friends and used to spend most of the time together.

Jail officials said the incident occurred at around 6am. Arun picked a brick, washed it, chanted some prayers and hit Sanjiv, who was sleeping near him, on the head. Fellow inmates sounded the jail officials and Arun was nabbed. Sanjiv was rushed to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
