A day after a 20-year-old youth was hacked to death on a bus in Adampur, around 20km from Jalandhar, police on Sunday arrested his friend Balihar Ram, 34, for murder.
Balihar and his accomplices — Harman Singh, 25, and Jagmeet Singh, 22 — had hatched the plan to falsely implicate a Hoshiarpur man so that he could be coerced into reaching a compromise in an old case of kidnapping.
The trio along with the victim, Sunny of Kala Bakra village, were booked on kidnapping charges in 2015. They were out on bail.
Sunny and Balihar were on their way back home after appearing in a Hoshiarpur court in relation to the kidnapping case on Saturday when three bike-borne men forcibly stopped the bus. Two of them barged into the bus and attacked Sunny with sharp-edged weapons. Balihar was the one who informed the police.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the Hoshiarpur man had sought ₹8 lakh for reaching a compromise in the kidnapping case, but the accused wanted to get it done for free. Balihar told the police that Sunny was not aware of their plan and they only intended to injure him.
Earlier Balihar had alleged that the Hoshiarpur man was behind the murder, but cops got suspicious as he had managed to escape unhurt. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, said the SSP.
The cops had even rounded up the Hoshiarpur man during the probe.
A case of murder has been registered against Balihar, Harman, Jagmeet and their unidentified accomplice at the Adampur police station. Police are searching for the remaining accused.
