A mute and mentally challenged boy of 7 from Thathiri Gate locality here was on Wednesday allegedly received a brutal punishment from his schoolteacher for forgetting to do homework.

On Thursday, the boys’ parents and neighbours held a protest against the school administration and demanded action against the teacher who had allegedly both slapped and caned the child severely. The victim’s father, Rajesh Kumar, told the media that his son, Madhav, a student in Class 3 at Batala’s Shri Hari Modern Senior Secondary School, had come home crying on Wednesday.

“When he was inconsolable for quite a while, I took him into my arms and found that he had multiple injury marks on the left arm and back. When I coaxed and cajoled him for about 10 minutes to share with me what had happened, he told me through gestures how the teacher had hit him brutally for not doing homework,” said Rajesh Kumar.

The annoyed parents rushed to the school but it had closed, so they lodged a complaint with the police. School principal Rimpi said the institution had apologised to the parents, and if needed, would also take action against the teacher.

Confirming the development, superintendent of police (investigation) AS Powar said he had marked the case to the city station house officer (SHO) and sought an inquiry report for action.
