An argument between school authorities and agitating parents over exorbitant fee took an ugly turn when a member of the school management fired in the air and thrashed one of the protesters at Uggi village in Nakodar on Saturday.

Nakodar Sadar station house officer (SHO) Davindar Singh said advocate KS Hundal, husband of Heritage Model School chairperson Taranjit Kaur, fired in the air from his licensed weapon during the altercation.

Rahimpur village resident Manpreet Singh said he had gone to the school to attend a meeting between protesting parents and the school management. Manpreet said when he objected to fee hike, he was asked to meet the principal. He said the principal told him that the fee and other charges had been raised with government’s permission.

Manpreet said when he came out of the principal’s office, employees of the school attacked him and did not allow him to leave. He alleged that Hundal reached the spot and started beating him up and when he retaliated, Hundal fired at him, but he escaped unhurt. He alleged that Hundal also abused him and threatened him with dire consequences.

Manpreet has been hospitalised. Doctors at the Nakodar civil hospital found three injury marks on his body and have sent the medico-legal report to police.

After the incident, more than 100 residents of Rahimpur and other adjoining villages staged dharna at the Uggi bus stand and blocked traffic on the Kapurthala-Nakodar road, demanding arrest of Hundal.

Shahkot deputy superintendent of police (DSP) RS Dhillon reached the spot and pacified the protesters by saying that police have taken Hundal into custody.
