National athletics academy trials to be held on Aug 19, 20

The Sports Authority of India has decided to set up an athletics academy with specific centers dedicated to middle and long distance runners.

The competition-cum-selection trials to select athletes for the national academy will be conducted on August 19 and 20 at Guru Nanak Dev Stadium for both boys and girls categories between the age group of 16 to 23 years for 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters races.

The selection of the budding players will be done on the basis of their performance in the trials. The registration process will be held on August 19 at 7am.

Rakesh Singh, incharge of Sports Authority of India, Ludhiana center, said, “The selection criteria to conduct selection trials are, the first three positions in state, north zone and school national organised by SGFI, junior and senior national organised by Amateur Athletics Federation of India (AAFI) and first 3 positions in All India Inter-University Championships”.

Sanjeev Sharma, director incharge, northern region, said, “We have conducted trials in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal already and in third phase we will conduct trials in Punjab”.

“Best 15-20 athletes will be selected from the northern region trials who will be further scrutinised at Bhopal, where the national centre (nodal centre) for mid and long races will be established. The selected athletes of the country will get the unique opportunity to be trained under best professional coaches with best scientific methods and amenities,” he added.

“To provide international exposure, as part of the exchange programmes, best athletes of the country will be visiting abroad to hone their skills”.

Singh added, “The athletes those are willing to take part in competition-cum-selection trials are advised to bring their original sports merit certificates and date of birth certificates.

The athletes who would score first three positions in the competition-cum-selection trials in their respective events would be awarded.
