Vinod Kumar Gangar, a senior Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader and former party's district president committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with double-barreled at his at his resident in Ranjeet Nagar in the Nawanshahr on Saturday noon.
Following the information city police rushed to the spot and initiated investigation in the case.
As per police reports, Gangar took this extreme step at around 12 pm as he was in depression from past month due to his destroying health conditions.
Family members said that Gangar had undergone a head surgery from a private hospital last year but did not recover well from the cause and remained disturbed, which was suspected to be a main reason behind the extreme step.
However, cops said that the exact reason of committing suicide would be known only after the completion of the investigation in the case. Police did not find any suicide note from his house.
The officials said that at the time of suicide, deceased's mother, wife and two sons were in the house, which rushed to bathroom side after hearing the noise of shot and found his body in the pool of blood.
Gangar was former district president of the BSP party and had also unsuccessfully contested assembly elections twice on the BSP ticket in 2007 and 2012 from Nawanshahr assembly seat.
Avtar Singh Karimpuri, State President of BSP said that it was an unfortunate incident and extended his condolence to the family over the death of Gangar.
A case under sections 174 of CRPC was registered at Nawanshahr police station.
