The Vigilan ce Bureau (VB) has arrested Harpal Singh, reader to sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Jiwan Jagjot while accepting a bribe of Rs 35,000 from a Jalandhar resident.

A team led by Hoshiarpur deputy superintendent of police (DSP), vigilance, Jagdish Singh, inspectors Major Singh and Dalbir Singh laid a trap after a complaint was lodged by Sukhninder Singh of Dhesiya Kahna of Jalandhar at Dilbagh hall in the district administrative complex and caught him red-handed.

As per the complainant, he had applied for an ‘intkal’ (mutation) of six-acre land in the name of his USA-based uncle in the office of SBS Nagar SDM. First, accused reader Harpal sought Rs 50,000 from him but, later, the deal was settled at Rs 35,000.

On Monday, the complainant handed over marked currency notes to the accused and the vigilance team nabbed him in the presence of two government witnesses, including veterinary inspector Harwinder Singh and Rajan Sharma, who works in the district employment generation and training department.

A case under Sections 7 and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against him.
