Neerja Bhanot was conferred the ‘Bharat Gaurav Award’ for her distinguished services to the nation and outstanding individual achievements at a function at the House of Commons in London on July 2, a spokesman said here on Sunday.

The award has been instituted by Sanksriti Yuva Sanstha, a Jaipur-headquartered NGO. Neerja’s brothers Akhil and Aneesh Bhanot attended the ceremony in London and received the award.

Neerja was the senior flight purser on a Pan Am flight which was hijacked at the Karachi airport on September 5, 1986. She was shot and killed while saving hundreds of passengers on board the plane.

Posthumously, she became the youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra.
