The Amritsar City Police have booked Arun Kumar (35), an unemployed resident of Namak Mandi, for attempting to rape a six-year-old neighbour on the terrace of her house on Saturday.

The girl was playing on the terrace of house at 1pm and the accused, her neighbour, crossed over to her side scaling the common wall between the houses.

The complaint was lodged by the mother and the grandmother of the child, police officials said. The two women were alerted by the screams of the child and rushed on the terrace to find the accused removing the clothes of the child. When he saw the women, he fled the spot and is yet to be traced.

Sub-inspector Rajwant Kaur of D Division Police Station said Kumar had been booked under Sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354 (assaulting or using criminal force with a woman) and 511 (attempt to commit and offence) of the Indian Penal Code.

"Investigations are on and a manhunt is on for the accused," the SI said.
