Nephew of Congress leader, 17 others arrested for gambling

The CIA staff-2 of Ludhiana police commissionerate arrested the nephew of Congress leader Ashok Parashar alias Pappi Shahpuriya and 17 others for allegedly gambling and recovered Rs 6.10 lakh from their possession on Monday evening.

The police registered two separate cases in this context at Division Number 2 police station.

The accused have been identified as Deep Sharma alias Deepu, who is Parashar's nephew and Gurpreet Singh of Field Gunj, Inderjit Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Deepinder Singh, Yogesh Kumar, Bhupinder Singh, Sanjiv Kumar, Vikramjit Singh, Sukhwinderpal Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Ramesh Kumar, Himmat Rai, Tajinder Singh alias Tinku, Tajinder Singh alias Chhotu, Harvinder Singh, Manpreet Singh and Sanjiv Kumar of Chhawni Mohalla.

Deep and Gurpreet were arrested for allegedly luring people towards betting and booked under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The remaining accused have been booked and arrested under sections 13, 3, 67 of the Gambling Act.

The accused were allegedly gambling at a property dealer's office at street number 7 of Field Gunj area, where the police struck following a tip-off.

Ashok Parashar had contested state assembly elections from Ludhiana west constituency.
