A new foot overbridge will be functional at Ludhiana railway station from the first week of January. Under construction for the past four months, the overbridge will be connected to each platform and to the entrance and exit points of the station.
Though it was proposed a few years ago, work on the overbridge began this year. "It will be a relief for passengers. The other three foot overbridges were not connected to each platform," said Manmohan Sharma, a city resident.
Most slabs have been placed on the overbridge, while the stairs are under construction. An official said Northern Railways general VK Gupta will inaugurate the bridge. "Majority of work has been completed. The bridge will also have an escalator on platform number 1," said Ravinder Sharma, station superintendent.
"Divisional railway manager NC Goyal had inspected the bridge and is satisfied," he said.
Rashpal Singh, who travels by rail regularly, said, "I am happy that the new bridge will be functioning soon. The authorities should also install escalators so that the elderly can reach other platforms without any problem. The new overbridge will help reduce the rush on foot overbridges at the station."
