Newly married beaten up by husband for dowry

punjab Updated: Aug 29, 2012 23:30 IST

A 31-year-old newly married woman has accused her husband of beating her mercilessly on Tuesday night demanding dowry.

She reached the civil hospital alone on Wednesday morning and got herself admitted. Her parents, staying at Nangal township, reached here in the afternoon.

Tajinder Kaur, employed as a computer operator at Pushpa Gujral Science City, said she was staying at the Hargobindpur Colony with her husband Vikram Kajra, who worked at the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala.

"Since our marriage in March 8, 2011, my husband has been torturing me for bringing less dowry. He used to thrash me and was advised by relatives and my parents several times not to do so in the past," she said.

She said she had even complained to the Wadala police in April this year.

"Yesterday night, he manhandled me and beat me mercilessly. In the morning, I somehow managed to reach the Kapurthala civil hospital and got myself admitted. I called my parents from Nangal," she said.

Her father Ram Parkash said, "Vikram wanted the money that I received as retirement benefits. He was pressurising her to bring Rs 10 lakh from us."

He said they were lodging a complaint with the police after the Tuesday's incident.

The police have booked the husband under sections 323 of IPC.
