A newly-wed was allegedly murdered by her in-laws for dowry at Dhannewali village near here on Tuesday night. The deceased Prabhjot Kaur was married to Satnam Singh, who went to Dubai 11 months back.

As per information, 25-year-old Prabhjot Kaur was found hanging in her room on Tuesday night. The in-laws of the deceased informed the police that Prabhjot committed suicide. However, Sukhdev Singh, father of the deceased, contested these claims. Sukhdev, a resident of Bhagwanpura village in Bholath in Kapurthala district, accused the in-laws of murdering his daughter for dowry.

"Prabhjot's in-laws called us on Tuesday night and asked us to come over immediately as she was unwell. However, when we reached the house, we found her hanging from the ceiling," the distraught father said.

Based on his complaint, a case has been registered against Prabhjot's mother-in-law Harvinder Kaur and brother-in-law Sarabpreet Singh. Station house officer of Rama Mandi police station Barjinder Singh said the two accused were absconding.
