Various NGOs from Amritsar on Saturday protested against felling of trees in the city and submitted a memorandum to chief parliamentary secretary Navjot Sidhu, urging her to take up the matter with the state government.

In the memorandum, they said clean environment plays a vital role in determining the healthy of people. The way fully grown trees were being cut in the name of development, is dangerous and mindless, they added.

“Scientists across the world have clearly said that 33% of the total area should be under green cover to provide clean and safe environment. Amritsar does not even have four per cent green cover and the state government is hell bent on reducing it further,” said Gurbhej Singh, general secretary, Mission Aagaaz.

“We want to convey to the chief minister that the government should stop the officials concerned from cutting trees in the name of development, which advocates only construction of concrete jungles,” he added.
