Police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang involved in smuggling of counterfeit foreign currency with the arrest of three persons, including a Nigerian national, and recovered fake US dollars to the tune of 1.05 lakh from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Christian, the Nigerian national who lives in Noida, Fiaz Ahmad, a resident of Delhi, and Amritpal Singh, a resident of Jujhar Singh Nagar in Bathinda.

Addressing a press conference here, Bathinda senior superintendent of police (SSP) Swapan Sharma said the police had got information that some people were involved in the supply of counterfeit foreign currency in the district and a special team was sent to Delhi to nab Christian.

On Christian’s interrogation, the team also arrested Fiaz and Amritpal and recovered the counterfeit US dollars from a van bearing registration number DL 03 CBHL 6710. The fake currency is worth Rs 70.35 lakh in India.

Sharma claimed that the three are members of an international gang involved in smuggling of fake foreign currency. He said that police are hopeful of more information about illicit trade of fake foreign currency in the region after interrogating the accused.
