Though the election fever in the educational institutions is at its crescendo during the yearly student council polls, but rivalry among the leaders is a never-ending process, on and off campus.

Police have arrested nine youths on murder charges as they allegedly were involved in an attack on a DAV College student leader, who succumbed to his injuries in June this year, six months after he was attacked. The crime was result of rivalry due to student politics.

The accused are activists of Hindustan Student Association(HSA). They allegedly had attacked Pardeep Khatkar (23) of Indian National Student Organisation on January 18 in Sector 44 and he succumbed to the injuries in June this year.

Two other accused in the case are absconding and the crime branch on Sunday initiated proceedings to declare them proclaimed offenders. The accused are Amit Sherawat (24) of Gohana and Sanjeev Malik (24) of Narwana in Haryana. They also are HSA activists.

Those arrested have been identified as Sachin Nehra of Dohala village in Jind district, Raghav Sood of Kurukshtra, Jitender Singh alias Jeetu of Narwana, Sunny of Narwana, Varinder Kumar of Haripura village in Kaithal district, Harvinder Singh alias Harry of Kurukhestra, Amandeep Khatkar of Khatkar village in Jind district and Gaurav Singh Rana of Ambala. Most of the accused are students or pass-outs of DAV College, Sector 10 and Panjab University.

Inspector Gurmukh Singh of crime branch said the reason behind the murder was student politics.

A group of HSA activists of DAV College were attacked by INSO supporters in 2015, in which Harjit Singh and two others had received injuries. An attempt-to-murder case was registered against some INSO supporters. On January 18, 2016, the accused INSO activists were going for a court hearing, when HSA members attacked them in Sector 44.

Pardeep Khatkar received serious injuries and was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital-32 and later shifted to a private hospital in Gurgaon where he succumbed to his injuries on June 17, 2106.

After the attack, 11 youths were booked for assaulting Pardeep, Mohinder Singh and Prince. After Pardeep’s death, police added murder charge against the accused. The case was then handed over to the crime branch.
