A day after Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini claimed at a press conference in Jalandhar that Nishan Singh (19) had abducted Faridkot girl Shruti Sachdeva following her parents’ refusal to marry them off, the DGP said on Monday, “Even if it is presumed that the girl had gone with him willingly, it is still an offence to forcibly take away a minor girl from her house at gunpoint in her parents’ presence.”
A team of the state police had arrested Nishan and rescued Shruti from Goa on Sunday.
Saini said Nishan’s mother Navjot Kaur, who is still evading arrest, had gone to meet Shruti’s parents three days before the abduction and requested them to allow her to marry Nishan. “The police are still investigating the case and have not yet questioned Nishan or the girl. We will take strict action in accordance with the law,” he said.
Saini admitted that had Nishan been arrested following the recovery of the girl on July 27, about a month after Nishan first took her away, the abduction would not have taken place. “We are looking into why Nishan was not apprehended then,” he said.
The DGP said the police had recovered the weapon Nishan had pointed at Shruti’s parents while abducting her, and also the vehicle in which the girl was taken away before it was abandoned.
Bathinda zone IG Nirmal Singh Dhillon said Nishan had agreed to pay a monthly rent of Rs 18,000 for the shack at Baga beach where he was staying with Shruti, and had produced a fake identity card to get the accommodation. “They were first spotted in Vasco on a motorcycle they had hired. They then moved to Dona Paula in north Goa before shifting to the nearby Baga beach. It was a woman head constable who first spotted the two sitting on lounge chairs at the beach,” said Dhillon.
He said Nishan had Rs 2.5 lakh in cash with him, which was enough to take care of his daily needs. “The accused had once taken away a moped of the woman owner of the shack and was penalised by the Goa Police for it,” said Dhillon.
Nishan, who possessed fake driving licences, was living there as Gurpreet Singh and the girl as Jasmeet Kaur.
Saini lauded the police forces of Goa, UP, J&K and Himachal Pradesh for assisting them in the case.
Shruti to reach Faridkot tonight
Faridkot range IGP NS Dhillon said the police team in Goa had already procured Nishan’s transit remand. “Nishan and Shruti are being brought to Delhi in a flight, from where they will be taken to Faridkot by road. “We will hand over the girl to her parents once she reaches Faridkot late on Monday night,” he said.
