The Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) has sent a proposal for a grant of Rs 100 crore from the ministry of human resource management (MHRD) for the development of infrastructure and facilities in the state.
The NIT had requested grant for the construction of a guest house, stadium, science block, hostels and a student activity centre.
NIT director SK Das said that over the years, student strength had risen by 20%, which had resulted in shortage of hostels and classrooms.
"We have demanded a grant of Rs 20 crore for a guest house, as presently we just have 15 rooms. We have planned a multi-storey state-of-art guest house with 50 rooms. The stadium will include ultramodern athletic track, football ground, basketball ground, cricket pitch, and shooting range with seating capacity of 6,000 spectators. For all this, we have demanded Rs 25 crore," Das said.
He claimed that there was less seating capacity at the old science block, for which the NIT had demanded a grant of Rs 21 crore. For construction of new hostels, Rs 20 crore have been demanded.
He said, "We will also construct a six-storey building with a lift system. Apart from a modern canteen and alumni centre, there will be students activity centre for which a grant of Rs 16 crore was requested. The student welfare centre and offices for all the societies would be constructed where the students can hold their meetings and can practice for their performances related to dramatic, music and NCC etc."
Meanwhile, NIT Jalandhar has also bagged a grant of Rs 2 crore by the ministry of human resource and development for starting new post graduate programmes, faculty and staff development for improved competence and infrastructure development.
Das said, "The total grant has been sanctioned for enhancement of research and development activities, modernisation and strengthening of laboratories and libraries. The grant also includes money for better interaction with industry, academic support for weak students and refurbishment."
