The police are to make any arrests in the robbery at the Punjab and Sind bank, Villa Baju, branch on Thursday. The police is also yet to release the sketch of the accused, something that should have been done within hours of the incident.

Perhaps this inefficiency of the Batala police is what emboldens criminals and is responsible for the increasing number of snatchings and robberies in the city.

Ghuman police station SHO Kulwinder Singh refused to answer a query on the increasing crime rate in the city.

Meanwhile, district Congress committee president Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa claimed that policing was lax in the city as SHOs preferred to leave their post at night.

He also questioned the night patrolling scheme of the government, claiming that he saw no policemen on the road from Batala to Kotli Surat Malhi on Friday.

He also questioned that claim that 1,400 vehicles had been purchased.

"Residents have in fact, started, taking care of their own security and deeply distrust the police under this regime."

President of senior citizen forum retired principal, Harbans Singh, claimed that registering a complaint with the police was sometimes, even worse, than being a victim of crime.
