Delay in auction of parking lots on the Ferozepur Road and failure of the Ludhiana municipal corporation (MC) officials to take action against contractors who are overcharging visitors have left people at the receiving end.

Auction of parking lots on Ferozepur Road, Feroze Gandhi Market, Ghumar Mandi, Sarabha Nagar Market, I Block Sarabha Nagar and Malhar Road was scheduled for earlier this month, but it was cancelled due to imposition of the model code of conduct for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Now, the MC commissioner has sought permission from the chief electoral officer for holding auction. According to the MC, if the auction is not held by March end then corporation officials will have to take care of the parking lot at Feroze Gandhi Market. But, the same contractors will continue overcharging at parking lots on the Ferozepur Road.

Rajat Verma, a city resident visiting Ansal Plaza, said, “I was charged Rs 30 for first hour for car parking, when the actual rate was Rs 15. When I asked for the reason, the parking staff started arguing with me and forced me to pay Rs 30. I don’t know why the MC officials don’t take any action against the contractor.”

“In future, the MC should not hire these contractors as they indulge in overcharging. The civic body could have also held auction last month if it was possible,” he added.

Meanwhile, mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria said people should pay Rs 15 only for first hour and should not pay Rs 30 at any cost. The parking contractor had no authority to demand Rs 30 for the first hour, he added.

The mayor also appealed the visitors to submit a complaint to him if any contractor was fleecing them.

When contacted, MC commissioner Shruti Singh said, “We have sought permission from the chief electoral officer of Punjab for holding auction of parking lots as early as possible. Once we get a green signal, we will auction the parking lots immediately.”
