To ensure smoother flow of traffic in Patiala city during the day hours, the district administration has imposed a ban on the entry of heavy vehicles in the city coming from Chandigarh and on way to Bathinda, while passing Sangrur including Samana.

Such vehicles have now been directed to take the Southern Bypass, situated outside the city, and which connects Patiala to Sangrur and Samana roads.

Deputy commissioner Varun Rajoom has ordered the ban during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee on Tuesday at the district administration complex.

"With the Southern Bypass now open, heavy vehicles coming from Chandigarh to Sangrur, Bathinda including or coming from Bathinda to Chandigarh will have to use the Southern bypass for the commuting. The transport department and the district police will keep a watch and implement the ban," said the DC.

Taking stock of other road safety measures, the DC also instructed the municipal corporation officials to take the possession of generator sets put up outside showrooms in an illegal manner.

"Notices had been issued to these establishments in March," the DC added, claiming that he had directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to construct a bus stop near the Thekera Wala statute to facilitate commuters, who take a bus for Sangrur or Samana.
