While flyovers like the Elevated Road and others in the city have come to be associated with oft reported incidents of fatal or near-fatal road accidents, the district administration intends to do something in this regard.
Strict instructions have been issued by Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat to the traffic police to take strict action against those parking their vehicles on the sides of these flyovers, in a meeting held to improve the traffic scenario in the city.
"Already section 144 CrPC has been imposed to improve the traffic scenario in Amritsar. Under this section there is a ban on dumping construction material along the road sides," said the DC, while addressing the meeting. Talking about safety of school children commuting by school transport, he added that it is mandatory for a conductor to accompany the van, bus and auto rickshaw drivers.
"It would be mandatory to accommodate the students as per the seating capacity of the vehicles ferrying the school students," he said. He directed the Amritsar Municipal Corporation officials to ensure that the roads of Amritsar have zebra crossings, speed breakers and sign-boards pertaining to traffic rules.
"Besides this, the PWD officials have been directed to put signboards wherever work is in progress on the city roads," he said. Bhagat also directed the officials concerned to ensure that railings are constructed along bridges and flyovers that do not have one in the interest of safety of commuters.
