The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday directed the authorities to allow protests only beyond 500 yards of the radius of Khalsa College.
The order from the high court bench of justice MMS Bedi came on the petition of Khalsa College Charitable Society Amritsar and others, pleading that all the four gates of the college were closed by the agitating students in protest against the suicide by one student.
The student allegedly committed suicide after he was debarred from appearing in an examination due to shortage of lectures.
The students and staff members were not being allowed to enter the college premises since April 26. The university examinations are to commence from May 3.
The court observed that prima facie the right of peaceful agitation seemed to have been misused resulting in the infringement of fundamental rights of the other students to take examinations, besides curtailing the functioning of colleges being run by the petitioner society.
The court asked the district magistrate and commissioner of police to immediately look into the matter and ensure that there is no breach of peace.
