frequency modulation (FM) radio transmission station

The project of creating frequency modulation (FM) radio transmission station and a modern studio worth Rs 48 crore at Abohar in Fazilka district is suspended for the past more than a year, as the state government has failed to arrange the 2.5 acres required.

Last year, the union ministry of information and broadcasting had approved the project and asked the Punjab government to arrange the land. Formal letters were written to the municipal committee and rural development office but nothing came out of it.

The FM station would have been a great source of news and entertainment in the region. It could have been a platform for passing on tips to cotton and kinnow farmers, who are unaware of pests and crop diseases.

"It's all fault of the state government that the FM centre has not been created, so far," said Kuldeep Singh, former Sarpanch of Daulatpura village. "Chunks of public land are unused for the past many decades. It includes the 60 acres at Focal Point and another space at seed form near juice factory," said Vimal Dadai, a member of the local civic body.

Young people could have used the FM station to display their talent, said Geetanjali, a college student. "It's easy for the state government to blame the Centre but difficult to look into own shortcomings that have failed commence in the region," said sate leader of opposition Sunil Jakhar, who is also legislator of Abohar.

"The FM station in Abohar could have helped the state counter anti-India propaganda on Pakistan radio," said Jakhar. "I will take up the matter with the chief minister." Attempts to contact the Fazilka deputy commissioner were futile, while additioan deputy commissioner Charandev Singh Mann said he was unware of the issue.
