Nominations filed for lone ward

Candidates for the June 7 municipal corporation bypoll to ward number 6 filed their nomination papers today.

Ward number 6 is set for a triangular contest between Congress candidate Iqbal Singh Dhillon alias Babli, Shiv Sena's Saka Babu and BJP's Madhu Gargi, who is the widow of former councilor Purshotam Gargi. This seat has been lying vacant since the death of Purshottam Gargi on June 22.

Four others BJP leaders had applied for tickets from this ward, but the party decided to field Madhu Gargi.

Speaking to HT, Madhu Gargi said: "Our party has always focused on development of the area and this time too, our agenda is gong to be the same."

Babli, who is said to be the right-hand man of former Bathinda (Urban) MLA Harminder Singh Jassi, said, "Being a resident of this ward, I am well versed with its problems. My top priority is going to be tackling the water shortage issue."

Deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer KK Yadav stated that elections would be conducted in corporation's ward number 6 and the municipal councils of Rampura's ward number 16, Raman's ward number 13, Sangat's ward number 3 and 8 besides to the Nagar panchayat of Talwandi Sabo's ward number 1 to 13 on June 7. The counting of votes will be held on June 10 and results will be declared by 6 pm.
