Despite having a big force of leaders with them, when it comes to fielding covering candidates in the parliamentary elections most nominees cutting across party lines in the region trust their family members.

All candidates of the main political parties have fielded their near and dear ones as covering candidates.

As the sitting MP and SAD candidate from Bathinda, Harsimrat Kaur Badal filed her nomination papers here on Monday her brother and Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia filed papers as her covering candidate.

In the 2009 parliamentary elections, late Surinder Kaur Badal, wife of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, was the covering candidate for Harsimrat Badal.

Interestingly, when the chief minister saw Majithia outside the office of the additional district electoral officer where nominations were filed by Harsimrat, he was heard asking the revenue minister what he was doing here. In reply, Majithia said his sister had asked him to be present here.

Gurdas Singh Badal (83), father of Congress-PPP joint candidate Manpreet Singh Badal and brother of CM Parkash Singh Badal, filed his nomination papers as the covering candidate for Manpreet.

The trend of having a covering candidate from the family was also reflected when Krishna Rani, wife of sitting Ferozepur MP and SAD candidate from the same constituency Sher Singh Ghubaya, filed her papers.

The SAD MLA from Bassi Pathana assembly segment Nirmal Singh, who is husband of sitting MP and party candidate from Faridkot parliamentary constituency Paramjit Kaur Gulshan filed nomination papers as her covering candidate.

Krishan Kaur, wife of Congress candidate from Faridkot Joginder Singh Panjgrain, also filed papers as the covering candidate of her husband.
