Citing lack of expertise as the reason, UT engineering department has refused to conduct the survey of National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology building in Sector 17 - which collapsed on June 8 due to a fire - and the adjoining building.
The UT estate office had written to the engineering department last week seeking advice on whether it was safe to remove debris from the site.

The estate office had also asked the department to inspect the adjoining building and give a report on whether it could be retrofitted or needed demolition.

The incident had left two firemen dead.

UT chief engineer SK Chadha said they had written back to the estate office informing that they did not have the expertise to carry such a survey.

Confirming the development, UT assistant estate office (AEO) Rahul Gupta said they had received the communication from the engineering department. "We will look for an agency which has the required expertise to carry such a survey," he added.

The Chandigarh administration has imposed a restriction on NIELIT and its adjoining building, which has been declared unsafe for human living and working. The order, however, does not apply to police, paramilitary, military persons or any other government servant on official duties.
