Noted eye surgeon Dr Grewal dies at 87

Noted eye surgeon Dr Dhanwant Singh Grewal died after a brief illness here on Thursday, family sources said on Friday. He was 87.Dr Grewal was awarded the Padma Shri in 1981. However, he returned the award in protest against Operation Bluestar in 1984.

Noted eye surgeon Dr Dhanwant Singh Grewal died after a brief illness here on Thursday, family sources said on Friday. He was 87.Dr Grewal was awarded the Padma Shri in 1981. However, he returned the award in protest against Operation Bluestar in 1984.

Dr Grewal, who conducted free eye operations for actor Salman Khan's NGO Being Human, is survived by his son, Dr Pushapwant Singh, who performed his last rites on Friday.

Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Badal have condoled his death.In a message, the CM described Dr Grewal as an accomplished eye surgeon who performed countless surgeries with utmost precision and diligence during his long career spanning more than 60 years.
