Under the direction of the ministry of external affairs (MEA), residents of the region’s rural areas can, for the first time, avail the facility of applying for passports online in the common service centre (CSC) of their respective areas.
This service will be launched for the first time in the region after July 19. The CSC provides physical facility to rural and remote locations where access to computers and the internet is almost negligible.
Under the Public Private Partnership module, the CSC works on a three-tier structure consisting of CSC operator known as the village level entrepreneur (VLE), the service centre agency (a private company) and state designated agency (SDA), identified by the state government.
One just has to approach the VLE of their respective areas for applying for a passport.
Meanwhile, one can also apply for a passport from the post office or the speed post office for a nominal amount of ? 100. The regional passport office has extended passport services to post offices.
Harmanbir Singh Gill, regional passport officer, said, “The Doaba region gets maximum passport applications.
To facilitate passport issuance process and make it easier for the rural population, we are extending the facility of passport application to VLE under the direction of MEA.”
