Despite continuous complaints by city residents, the parking contractor at Feroze Gandhi market continues to fleece people and misbehave with them in the absence of police inside the parking area.

Not only this, it has also come to light that the contractor has been illegally charging money from street food vendors for parking their rehris inside the market.

Jasdev Sekhon, superintendent of Tehbazari wing of Zone D, said the rehris were being charged from anything between Rs 1,500- Rs 2,000 per week. “The issue has recently come to light and we would soon take action against the contractor” said Sekhon.

Sekhon added that many complaints against the contractor have been received by the MC and an action would be taken against them. The contractor Krishan Lal and Co has been criticised by the residents for overcharging parking fee since March last year, when the contract was given to them by MC.

The MC had taken steps to curb fleecing in the past but these have remained fruitless due to lack of follow-up by officials of the Tehbazari wing.

On Thursday, staff members of the parking lot misbehaved with a female by stopping her car by parking two scooters in front of it. They then asked her to leave claiming that there was no space in the parking lot.

On asking the manager of the market, Gurdev Singh, about this, he said he had no knowledge of any misbehaviour at the parking lot. “I do not have any information regarding the issue. I will confirm and contact you later,” he said and did not get back.

Feroze Gandhi market, the most visited market in the city, has remained in the limelight due to the misbehaviour of contractor with the visitors. Earlier, the parking lot was managed by LRY construction which was also accused of overcharging and misbehaviour. The contract went to Kishen Lal and Co for Rs 1.90 crore for a time period of one year in March 2013.

Visitors are being charged Rs 15 against the fixed rate of Rs 12 for two-wheelers and Rs 30 against the rate of Rs 23 for cars. With more than 2,000 two-wheelers and nearly 1,000 cars coming to the parking everyday, the overcharge money counts to lakhs in a month.
